Using an iPod while Driving Impacts the Driver Performance

Friday, March 30th, 2007

iPods have a significant effect on driver performance, according to Drexel University professor of computer science Dario Salvucci, who recently conducted a preliminary study to determine the effects of iPod use while driving. The study, a first in this area, found the effects of using an iPod while driving comparable to those previously reported for dialing a cell phone while on the road.

“These findings serve as a first step toward understanding the potential effects of portable music-player interaction on driver behavior and performance,” said Salvucci. “Surprisingly, despite the plethora of research on driver distraction, there have been no studies to date of how interaction with a portable music player may affect driver performance.”

A 2006 General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) Insurance National Drivers Test study polled 5,288 licensed drivers from all 50 states and found that 20 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 to 24 had selected songs on an iPod while driving.

The Drexel study was conducted on a group of 12 people who reported experience using an iPod. An iPod with both audio and video capability was used for the iPod tasks. While driving, participants selected and played three types of iPod media: music, informational podcasts or videos. They were later tested to see how much attention they paid to a song or video. About 84 percent of the participants paid attention to and understood the media content. Physorg

Flash based Video IPod Could Shake Up Memory Market

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

A UBS analyst said today that indications point to Apple using a different type of memory in its next video iPod, a switch that would significantly affect suppliers Sandisk and Marvell.

UBS analyst Alex Guana said Apple could be working on 16GB and 32GB models of their video iPod that use NAND flash memory, as opposed to hard disk drives, or HDDs.  He explained in a client note that a NAND-based video iPod would help increase demand for the memory and drive up its value. Sandisk has been hurt recently by gluts in NAND inventory that sapped prices. Forbes

iPod Tours at the SFMOMA Museum

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Starting today, patrons at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art can borrow an iPod for $2 and listen to a tour of the museum’s two latest exhibits.

Apple donated 100 video iPods to the museum, which have been outfitted specifically with walking tours of its new Picasso and Modern Art and Brice Marden exhibits. The tours are broken into one to two minute snippets, appearing like song tracks on the iPod. And in lieu of album art, it has reproductions of the art.

The SFMOMA has already been producing free museum podcasts, but this is the first time it’s offering self-guided iPod tours. And less you are thinking about running off with an iPod, visitors must plunk down their driver’s license and credit card in exchange. The iPods have also been wrapped in a protective case in case they’re dropped. Link

    Mexican airline rents device iPods

    Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Mexican flight attendants now serve fistfuls of salted snacks, carbonated drinks and, for about $5, iPods. By renting the iconic music and video device to passengers, low-cost airline Volaris has got the jump on U.S giants, such Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and UAL Corp.’s United Airlines, who have been talking for months about offering iPod seat connections.

“We’re the first to use iPod’s. We like it because no one else has it,” said public relations officer Alfonso Collantes.

Volaris began handing out the 30 Gigabyte devices free on Feb. 8, but will soon start charging 50 pesos per flight.
