The Kindle SleeveCase

Apple’s iTunes player passed
RealPlayer in unique users in 2007 (see Figure 1). iTunes is the only
player to show a positive growth rate over the past year, growing by
26.8% from Dec. 2006 to Dec. 2007 (see Table 1). QuickTime usage fell
8.6%, RealPlayer fell 17.5%, and Windows Media Player was essentially
flat over the past year. Note that the growth trend lines show a more
accurate picture without the monthly fluctuations. Both QuickTime and
RealPlayer were essentially flat, while Windows Media Player grew
slightly. Only iTunes showed a significant positive growth rate.

iPhone, which combines Apple’s iPod music player, a video player and a Web browser, is now sold in the United States and Europe, and Apple plans to launch it in Asia this year.

Last week, Apple and China Mobile, the world’s largest cellular operator, terminated talks to launch iPhone, one of the hottest gadgets to hit U.S. and European stores in 2007.

Apart from China, Apple had also initiated talks with NTT DoCoMo Inc and Softbank Corp to bring its multimedia device to Japan, although sources at both firms said revenue-sharing was a hotly contested issue.

AIS, 21.4 percent owned by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, also signed a contract with state-owned fixed line operator TOT to develop their networks jointly in a bid to cut costs, AIS president Wichian Mektrakarn told reporters.

The panelists in today’s discussion hold slightly differing opinions on how to monetize their content, yet they all agree upon one point: Apple and iTunes are a positive force in the digital marketplace.

The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.

“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”

Every iPod features seamless integration with iTunes 7. The iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) features the world’s largest catalog with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 400 movies. The iTunes Store has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies, making it the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store.

I held my tongue as he chattered on about all the supposedly fascinating things he was doing with his Microsoft (MSFT) Windows machines. We barely know each other, and he had no idea what I write about for a living. But when the subject turned to the iPod, he gave me an opening I couldn’t resist. “Oh those iPods,” he said dismissively. “People are always bringing them into the shop with complaints, and they don’t even play standard MP3 songs like all the others.”

“Absolutely not true,” I said, breaking my silence. “I don’t know where you got that idea, but it’s patently false.”
A Popular Misconception

His convoluted explanation, as best I could understand it, was that he thought iPods played some “Apple-only” format, which he called ACC (it’s actually AAC, as in Advanced Audio Coding, and it isn’t “Apple-only”). I explained that the iPod plays every major digital audio format save two, Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Ogg Vorbis.

He had somehow gotten it into his head that all online music stores, save iTunes, sell MP3s on which there are no copy restrictions. Noting that he was vastly misinformed, I told him that in in fact no online music store sells unprotected MP3s—the exception being eMusic.com—while Napster (NAPS) and Yahoo! Music (YHOO), for instance, sell heavily protected WMA files, which are compatible with a wide range of portable players, but not the iPod. Where he got his set of ideas, I don’t know.

EMI has been The Beatles’ record label since the early 1960s. The Beatles have so far been the most prominent holdout from iTunes and other online music services, and Apple’s overtures to put the music online were stymied by a long-running trademark dispute with The Beatles’ commercial guardian, Apple Corps. Ltd.

In February, Apple Inc. and Apple Corps resolved their legal feud over use of the apple logo and name, paving the way for an agreement for online access to the Fab Four’s songs.

“These findings serve as a first step toward understanding the potential effects of portable music-player interaction on driver behavior and performance,” said Salvucci. “Surprisingly, despite the plethora of research on driver distraction, there have been no studies to date of how interaction with a portable music player may affect driver performance.”

A 2006 General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) Insurance National Drivers Test study polled 5,288 licensed drivers from all 50 states and found that 20 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 to 24 had selected songs on an iPod while driving.

The Drexel study was conducted on a group of 12 people who reported experience using an iPod. An iPod with both audio and video capability was used for the iPod tasks. While driving, participants selected and played three types of iPod media: music, informational podcasts or videos. They were later tested to see how much attention they paid to a song or video. About 84 percent of the participants paid attention to and understood the media content. Physorg

Although the phones
are not scheduled to be available until June of this year, iPhone sales
on eBay have totaled more than $18,000 within the past month, according
to research conducted by HammerTap. 

What’s selling? Buzz. $18,000 worth of buzz. 

“People
are so excited about new and innovative product releases like the
iPhone that sellers find any way they can to make a profit off that
excitement,” says Jen Cano, spokesperson for HammerTap. “And according
to the research, anything iPhone related sells for an average of $35.” 

Ranging
from domain names and e-mail addresses to T-shirts and pictures,
sellers are making an auction out of anything they can get their hands
on. For example, the domain name “www.iphoneforcheap.com” had 11 bids
and sold for $41. 

“Whatever is selling now is just a glimpse of
what is to come,” says Cano. “Some sellers will make a lot of money on
iPhone accessories after the phone is released.”

Complete My Album offers customers up to 180 days after first purchasing individual songs from any qualifying album to purchase the rest of that album at a reduced price. When users buy any song on iTunes the corresponding album will immediately appear on their personalized Complete My Album page with the reduced price listed. For example, a user who’s already purchased three 99 cent singles and decides to buy the corresponding $9.99 album would be able to download the remaining songs to complete the album for just $7.02, without having to buy the singles again.
